I never did understand why restaurants & packaged food makers are killing their customers on purpose.

One of the divisions of the company for whom I worked was food manufacturing- every kind of food.
I could not believe what is in processed food. The worst, however, was beef- especially ground beef. No Thank You!

Conspiracy Theory: Undertakers secretly pose as menu item creators for the fast food & packaged food industries. (Just kidding, of course. Everyone knows it's the cardiologists.)
Yeah, lots of the garbage allowed here is banned in the EU like food coloring made from Tar or Petroleum... I don't understand why Congress exists, they don't do anything but take bribes from every industry.

Here's an article... Didn't read it all, but I didn't know that about sliced bread!

And then there came "consume by," & "expiration dates," so are these incentives to over consume, cautionary, or assurance your gov. had your best interests, not those of their contributors, at heart?

Yuck! Those are good articles.

Where I worked, ammonia was added to ground beef that was to become frozen patties. Outside were 2 story tall cylinders of ammonia gas which led to carbonators where the gas was forced into water. The evil liquid was mixed in giant drums with the beef in order to let the company give a longer expiration date. It is the same ammonia gas that we used in the refrigeration units. Not exactly food grade, is it?

You don't even want to know how they take the fat out of ground beef. (Done so they can add it back in at the percentage specified by the customer. Trans fat is allowed to be added to beef!)

Beef is not red or pink. Chicken is not yellow. These are marketing "amendments".

It makes me glad that my parents are "off the boat" people. We ate no sugar, no soda pop, no white flour. Meat came from the mom & pop butcher store. Chicken was alive when one ordered it. Bread from the Italian store or German bakery, sliced at home. My mother made her own whole wheat or flax seed pasta. (We ate lots of flax seed.) Juice was squeezed, not purchased. Rarely was processed food found at home, other than the occasional box of shredded wheat. No margarine either. Olive oil was king!

But, we can all eat healthy and exercise yet still step in front of a bus. I guess it all comes down to how well you want to feel before the bus hits you.

That's insane. I haven't eaten regular ground beef in probably 20 years outside of a few trips to Burger King. I guess though that the Walmart Organic could be the same process you're describing.

I have known for a long time about Sodium Nitrite added to meats to make them Pink and "fresh"... Well, if the consumers were taught that grey meat wasn't necessarily bad, I would *assume* that people could use their nose to figure it out..

I haven't eaten a Hotdog in probably 18 years because of that knowledge, and that applies to deli sliced lunchmeat as well.

You were raised right, which will let you know to look both ways to identify the bus!

Can't remember if I posted. I was tired and it was raining/thundering. I set up a curbside order at Walmart. Met my friend in town and he's not feeling well-- kidney stones. He joined me in Walmart bc he needed a few things and then I got my curbside order. He took a brief look at my truck's engine to see if the motor mounts were broken or loose but it didn't move so we don't know what the mystery sounds under the hood are still.

He gave me a bit more info about the situation at work. The employee who messed up and let a child out due to her negligence was going above the boss's head to corporate to try to pin the blame on my brother & the boss was trying to do damage control. Bro still thinks she was only deflecting and doesn't know the full extent to just how hard she was trying to get them to go after him instead of her when she was the one who messed up.

It's one of the reasons I don't like people.

Had to break up more cat fights. Brought Ginger into the living room to give her special treats away from the other kitties, since I don't get to treat her often. I was holding her and Fippy was losing his mind. Wagging his tail, standing on his hind legs, and whining. I set her down and he jumped up to touch noses with her while wagging his tail. I didn't realize he liked her that much. He usually doesn't like any other animal, but for some reason he likes her. Mom asked for an orange so I got one but carried Ginger with me and held her out. Mom rolled her eyes and I handed her the orange.

That was her dessert after I made my version of shepherd's pie.

You mentioned Walmart Organic Beef, Spicoli43. The organic part sounds promising- if it is truly organic. But, for all I know "Organic" allows ammonia.

If any packaged ground meat states the percentage of fat and lean, the fat has been removed in the giant kettle of stinky chemical, then added back. If you go to a butcher shop and the butcher grinds the meat, you don't know the fat percentage, but you don't get chemically washed & spun meat.

Probably the cleanest and most unadulterated meats are those meeting Kosher and Halal dietary guidlines. Neither will supply pork, but beef and lamb products are made. Kosher beef is only from, basically, the front half of the cow. Sorry, no Kosher sirloin! We have many Kosher, Parve and Halal shops around here for a great selection of hopefully healthier food.

I did some work in a Kosher poultry processing plant in Pa. It was almost identical to any other processing plant except for 2 things. 1. A rabbi would slit the throat of each individual bird as it was presented to them rather than the automated system at other plants. 2. The carcass after evisceration was tossed in salt to further remove blood. It was then rinsed prior to entering the chill tank. Everything else was identical.

Thanks. I wonder if all the chemicals are removed when draining the fat.

I don't know anything about Kosher because I'm not Jewish, and I don't know why there is such thing as Halal because at least in the poor parts of the Middle East, they use their left hand as toilet paper. They surely don't do that in the UAE, where the average person has a Ferrari for every day of the week, but I haven't had anything Halal that I know of.

After the tank-o-chemical, the meat did get sprayed with water. The tanks are like giant washing machines. I've no idea how well the stuff got rinsed. The ammonia is not rinsed. It's left to combat spoilage. (At least at the plants that the company for whom I worked owned.)

Kosher & Halal are similar in many ways, but have many differences. To me, Kosher is more about how the food was prepared, plus what foods are allowed. Halal is more about what foods are allowed. This very, very over simplified.

Jewish dietary law has various additional restrictions to which various people may choose to adhere. One example is the restriction of meat products and milk products together (as in cheeseburger). Many people I know have two refrigerators, two sets of cooking vessels and two sets of serving ware in order to comply. Parve is kind of the DMZ- The products are neither meat nor dairy. They can be enjoyed with meat or milk. There are lots of variations of compliance with Jewish dietary laws.

The people I know who follow Halal pretty much all follow the same strict guidelines. Cleanliness is paramount.

Living in & around Detroit has great advantages when it comes to meeting, enjoying and learning from other cultures. We have them all. (And we eat good!)

Do they use bidets in the middle east?
It rained all day again today. Last night (well Saturday night), Mom went to get herself some ice cream out of the freezer and didn't have her cane with her. She's not sure what happened but she faceplanted on the floor right in front of the living room door. She's not sure if she hit her head on the door or the floor. I heard the door from the vehicle my brother drives closing outside. Then I heard a thunk in the kitchen and Mom was shrieking. I got to her as fast as I could. I was trying to figure out the best way to help her up when my brother came through the door and I called to him that she fell. He managed to step over her into the living room and get in front of her (she was on her knees with her head down on the floor). I brought a kitchen chair over behind her. Brother managed to get her to take his hands so he could get her upright and then he picked her up and set her in the chair. She said her knees were really hurting badly. She bruised them. No marks on her head, no nausea, and she was ok. She was able to get back up after a few minutes and went to her chair in the living room and ate her ice cream. We were both up all night because I kept checking on her. She went to bed sometime after noon and I kept going in to check on her. She finally got up after midnight and wanted food.

Bro was teasing her that she converted to Islam on us with how she was on the floor. She's got a sense of humor about it at least.

Meanwhile, the employee who tried to blame my brother for her screwup has been rude to him at work, even though he never said anything to her and has never been rude to her. She was a manager but is now being treated like a new employee and she resents it. The president of their company called utter BS on her trying to blame my brother and said that it didn't matter where my brother was at the time of the incident and that watching the kids is not his responsibility in any way. Put the blame entirely on the employee who was responsible. Not sure if she'll stay there very long with her current attitude. But bro is still trying to transfer to security.

I don't get anything about Jewish life because they have 18,000 rules and they only follow the first 5 books of the Bible. I know with the Sabbath that they "take the day off" on Saturday when work is forbidden and they eat all day. I saw one short documentary that showed a family baking tons of Bread on Friday night, but that's all I got out of it.

I couldn't tell you if Kosher Salt was regular Table Salt or Salt from the Dead Sea, that's how little I know...

I'm all for cultural exposure and eating what they got (besides Dog), but in Montana that's Little Caesars for Ancient Italian, Panda Express for Chinese and Americanized Mexican.

This is he best "toilet" in Iraq for commoners...

Saddam had Gold Toilets, or Gold Trim at least.

Squat toilets are very common in Africa, Asia and many places in Europe. I don't know how to politely phrase this, so I'll paraphrase what a gastroenterologist told me: It provides the optimal position for complete & strain free emptying of the lower intestine.

The ones I've seen have traps like a normal toilet bowl and they flush similarly to how a Sloan Flushometer type of valve flushes, but sometimes only the lever is visible through the wall.

Along the Cultural Exposure comment that you mentioned, Spicoli43:
A Priest, a Rabbit and an Imam decided to donate blood. They went to the Red Cross donation station. The phlebotomist asked the Priest his blood type. He said "Type A", she asked the Imam. He said "Type B". She asked the Rabbit. He said "I'm probably a typo.".

Following the diet and nutrition theme:
I was in the checkout line at the snooty neighborhood pet food store with a bag of dog food. The woman in line in front of me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had? A zebra?.

I told her that I didn't have a dog, but was starting the Purina Diet again. I told her (and the 5 or 6 others who were now listening) that the nutrition is balanced and complete. Portion control is easy because you fill 1 or 2 pockets with nuggets and eat three every 30 minutes.

I was certain to tell them that last time I was on the diet I lost 50 pounds- but also that the diet may not be such a good idea because last time I did the diet I ended up in intensive care with all manner of tubes & pumps connected to me.

A man asked if that was because the diet poisoned me. I told him no. The diet was progressing along well until the part when I stopped to pee on a fire hydrant and got hit by a bus.

Woof!

Good ones, second one is legendary.

Speaking of homemade AC, I'm going to try this... I ordered the Foam and everything else is local or I have it. It's gotta work since the guy recorded 41 degrees...

Here's my Cousin Eddie version that failed with 2 SS bowls with Ice and with the cooler filled with Ice water... My only explanation is the fan didn't have enough power to push the volume of the cooler, whereas the 5 gallon bucket is half the size. It was "cool", but not cold and there was no output for the most part.
