Can anyone advise how to remove discolorations from a stainless steel sink?

An unknown cleaning fluid or chemical was accidentally spilled into this stainless steel kitchen sink, causing discolorations. I tried using a household stainless steel cleaner/polish, but it had zero effect. Can anyone advise how to remove these discolorations? Thank you

It may not be on the surface and stained the stainless. Pun intended.

I would try scotch-brite pad and barkeepers friend or even comet. It is possible to scratch the surface so be advised.
