Overnight, no. But trying to strong arm companies and countries around the world may well provide the final impetus to move on a major project to protect long term interests. That's the problem with not considering the long term. So many companies are terrible at long term planning because they can't look past the next quarter. Maybe that's why Trump has bankrupted so many companies. Canada has been talking about a pipeline to one of their coasts for years. This could be the push it takes to galvanize the people to approve of one. It would be better for them in the long run.Like I've said, it's a game of, lets make a deal.
Would anybody, in their right mind, think the ENERGY PARTNERS, would abandon their existing pipelines between CANADA, across MONTANA, both DAKOTAS, on too TEXAS, for the yet to be authorize pipeline across CANADA to their east coast?
The Keystone pipeline brings Canadian oil to the US. The XL extension is supposed to help move more Canadian tar sands oil into the US. There is also a line through Michigan that sends oil to Midwest refineries. The governor of Michigan has been trying to shut down line 5 across the Mackinac straights for years. It would be a major problem for the Midwest in terms of energy supply and jobs. It would nearly idle a refinery in Toledo. Happens to be where my SIL works.I thought we already had the Alaskan pipeline, where Canada receives $ for the pipes on their land, although the oil is American, traveling from one state to another?
just so that you know canada supplies usa with 60% of it imported oil. Canada sells this oil by pipeline at a below market price sort of a favorite son sort of thing. Now that usa has treated canada so poorly after being a friend so so long canada will be selling its oil to japan and europe at full market price. feeling in canada are very anti american these days.More like a game of Russian roulette. If Canada builds a pipeline to export their oil it will have bad consequences for the US. A tariff on Canadian aluminum will have little impact on Canada. They don't pay the tariff and will just sell it somewhere else. The US needs it, we don't have capacity and nobody will spend a billion dollars to build capacity based on a market condition that could disappear tomorrow. So we could try to import it from somewhere else if possible but of course we have reciprocal tariffs now so in any case the consumer will take it in the shorts with higher prices. Genius.
as i said canada sells oil to usa at a below market price a sort of favorite son sort of thing. Canada was lazy it was just to easy. now that tarifs are going canada will forsake usa and sell oil to japan and europe. Canada just completed the trans mountain pipe lines (two) to the pacific and has a very small part to finish a pipe line to the atlanticLike I've said, it's a game of, lets make a deal.

Sounds akin to blackmail as you describe it. Why do you think so many countries have a trade imbalance? You can thank congress for creating a tax code that made it beneficial for companies to move manufacturing off shore. This was done over time from the 80's to date, even the TCJA has tax advantages to manufacture off shore. The Donald has imposed Reciprocal tariffs. If Countries drop their tariffs, he drops them. US Presidents have let the World walk all over the USA because they have been weak for decades. That started to end with his first term, but it magnified bigly with Obama the last 4 years, so now it's go time.
He's not trying to win any Nice awards. If Countries want to do business, they will do what he says. For the Ukraine to get any more money for Yachts and Houses and Cars and whatever other laundering they did, they need to cough up Rare Earth Minerals...
He's a Businessman, and the real genius Leftists point out his failed businesses, but they have never started a business and have no idea how tough it is to survive.
As far as Canada, I don't know what we need from them, and if the residents want to get in a tizzy about it, then that's just fine with me, Eh...

Thank you trump, for your incite in viewing the U.S's economic interests from a businessman perspective, instead of like a socialist piggy bank, exampled by the 2 previous dem administrations.Canada and mexico did not start this trade war. Trump did
How is it "Blackmail" when the USA has a 10% Tariff on X Country, who has a 20% Tariff on the USA?Sounds akin to blackmail as you describe it. As I said before tariffs will only create jobs here at companies that have excess capacity available. Nobody will take on large capital expenditures to create capacity due to a tariff that can go away at any time.
Trump has said he would like to eliminate income taxes and replace it with tariffs. What a moronic idea. He's not a good businessman, he's bankrupted many companies, you can try and suger coat it any way you want.
Here can tariff anyone he wants, he's already to hand over Ukraine to his buddy Putin. His massively unqualified Secretary of Defense accidentally late that slip the other day. Do you think the US will be more or less safe if most of the world turns their back on us?
