Overnight, no. But trying to strong arm companies and countries around the world may well provide the final impetus to move on a major project to protect long term interests. That's the problem with not considering the long term. So many companies are terrible at long term planning because they can't look past the next quarter. Maybe that's why Trump has bankrupted so many companies. Canada has been talking about a pipeline to one of their coasts for years. This could be the push it takes to galvanize the people to approve of one. It would be better for them in the long run.

The Keystone pipeline brings Canadian oil to the US. The XL extension is supposed to help move more Canadian tar sands oil into the US. There is also a line through Michigan that sends oil to Midwest refineries. The governor of Michigan has been trying to shut down line 5 across the Mackinac straights for years. It would be a major problem for the Midwest in terms of energy supply and jobs. It would nearly idle a refinery in Toledo. Happens to be where my SIL works.

just so that you know canada supplies usa with 60% of it imported oil. Canada sells this oil by pipeline at a below market price sort of a favorite son sort of thing. Now that usa has treated canada so poorly after being a friend so so long canada will be selling its oil to japan and europe at full market price. feeling in canada are very anti american these days.

The Donald has imposed Reciprocal tariffs. If Countries drop their tariffs, he drops them. US Presidents have let the World walk all over the USA because they have been weak for decades. Sounds akin to blackmail as you describe it. Why do you think so many countries have a trade imbalance? You can thank congress for creating a tax code that made it beneficial for companies to move manufacturing off shore. This was done over time from the 80's to date, even the TCJA has tax advantages to manufacture off shore.
As I said before tariffs will only create jobs here at companies that have excess capacity available. Nobody will take on large capital expenditures to create capacity due to a tariff that can go away at any time.
Trump has said he would like to eliminate income taxes and replace it with tariffs. What a moronic idea. He's not a good businessman, he's bankrupted many companies, you can try and suger coat it any way you want.
